Bandsaws

Bandsaw is perhaps the most versatile saw and one of the most important basic machines in the workshop which can be used to cut, split and saw shapes in wood. It can be used to cut patterns and make notches, slice thick wood or saw thick wood into thinner planks.

What is bandsaw?

The bandsaw is a powerful and versatile woodworking machine that can saw not only wood but also plastic and soft metals such as aluminium. The band saw has a blade that runs around two rim wheels and a table that tilts from 0° to 45° to support the workpiece. The bandsaw also features a cutting guide and an angle guide which can be used for a wide range of splitting and cutting tasks similar to a table saw for example.

Bandsaw size

Bandsaws can be roughly divided into three different size categories; table models, lightweight floor models and full-size bandsaws. Table bandsaws are the most affordable and at the same time the most popular bandsaws on the market. Light floor model bandsaws are slightly more expensive and larger machines with features well suited to advanced hobbyists or light professional use. The full-size bandsaws have a welded steel frame and significantly more sawing power than other models which makes them the most suitable for professional use.

Teräsrunkoinen vannesaha on täysikokoinen ammattikone, joka on usein jo huomattavasti tehokkaampi ja tukevampi kuin jalustallinen vannesaha. Täysikokoisessa vannesahassa sahauskorkeus on mallista riippuen 200 - 400mm, joka riittää jo vaativampiin halkaisutehtäviin.

What to consider when choosing a Bandsaw?

When choosing a bandsaw the most important features are often the sawing height and sawing width, which largely determine the size of the pieces that can be cut. A bandsaw with a sawing height of 300mm can split and saw wood up to 300mm thick. The sawing width tells you how big the gap is between the blade and the frame. So if the sawing width is 200mm, then the machine can saw a board up to 400mm wide in the middle.

What are the advantages of a bandsaw?

Bandsaw can be used to perform many tasks more safely and accurately than, for example, a jigsaw or a table saw. The bandsaw blade does not leave a groove on the back of the workpiece in the same way as a table saw, which makes it a handy machine for cutting notches in woodwork, for example.

And because the bandsaw blade only saws downwards, it can also safely cut through crooked and uneven pieces of wood without the risk of kickback. In addition, the bandsaw can easily saw several pieces at once into the same shape by "taping" the pieces together.

While the blade of a circular saw is often 2 - 3mm thic, the bandsaw blade is often only 0.6mm thick, which means that less material is wasted than with a table saw. And because the bandsaw blade is supported at both ends of the machine, it doesn't vibrate up and down or bend as easily as a jigsaw blade, making it easier and more accurate to saw shapes.
