Jointer is an effective tool for straightening uneven and crooked pieces of wood and for straightening rough timber. With jointer you can straighten a piece of wood first on one or two sides and then make it rectangular and flat with planer thicknesser.
Jointer is effective tool for straightening wood
With a jointer you can plane an uneven piece of wood straight on two sides and then make the whole piece flat for example with a planer. By straightening the edges of the wood you can create seamless joints for example for glue-up panels.
How to use a Jointer
With jointer the workpiece must be planed first across it's width from one side. After that the workpiece can be turned upright by pressing the straightened side of the piece against the side fence of the jointer. Then you can straighten the edge of the workpiece and after that the whole piece can be flatten for example with a thickness planer.

What to consider when choosing a Jointer?
1. Planing width
When choosing a jointer the first thing you should think is how wide pieces you are going to plane mostly. For most users a 150mm or 200mm wide jointer will be more than enough while providing sufficient capacity for all common planing jobs.
And if the width of the jointer is not wide enough then you can cut the wider piece in half and straighten both sides one by one and then joint the pieces back together with glue or biscuit joints.
2. Table lenght
The length of the jointing table largely determines how long pieces can be jointed accurately on the machine. The maximum length of wood to be jointed can be calculated by the formula length of the planer x 2 so a 1500mm long jointer can accurately joint boards up to 3000mm long without additional supports.
3. Choosing a Cutterhead
Jointers are available with HSS 18% blades and with the advanced Helical cutter which consists of small pieces of carbide inserts. The HSS 18% cutter has the advantage of a low purchase price, but changing and adjusting the blades can take a lot of time especially if you are a novice user.
The Helical cutter has the advantage of a quieter running noise, better jointing results and low maintenance. The cutter's carbide bits never need to be adjusted or sharpened which makes it easy and hassle-free to use.
